Operating the Garden Railway & Santa Fe

My HO railroad in the basement is serious stuff, operating sessions, and all of that. The garden railroad is for fun. I can run a continuous loop by throwing a couple of switches, and I often just like to sit on the patio, surrounded by track and watch a train run.

However, I do have industries (most imagination) at each town on sidings, I have yards, I have passing tracks, and I can get a "little serious". When I do, a simple switch list is all that is needed. It is nice to actually read car initials and numbers without magnifying glasses or optivision, or whatever else. And I have little cards telling what industries exist (in my mind at least) at each siding and town. So the railroad does operate, between blizzards, tornados, heat waves, hail stones, after maintenance is done, and life is very good.

In summary, large scale has come a long ways, I have seen some work and layouts that rival anything in small scale, and a dedicated, friendlier group of modelers. Clubs are springing up everywhere, standards are being raised. Try it and have fun.
